Introduction
Iris pseudacorus (yellow flag iris) is a tall yellow-flowered waterside iris. IMPORTANT: like other irises its rhizome is acrid and toxic, a strong irritant purgative and emetic that can inflame the skin, mouth and gut. Despite some historic astringent/purgative folk use, it is a risky plant, chiefly ornamental (and invasive in places), and is NOT a safe home remedy.

Research
Iris pseudacorus is chiefly of toxicological interest: the rhizome contains acrid, irritant constituents and isoflavonoids that make it a strong purgative and emetic and a skin/mucous-membrane irritant; ingestion causes burning, vomiting and diarrhoea. Extracts show some antimicrobial activity in vitro, but its overriding practical fact is its toxicity and irritancy. It also yields a black dye/ink. Not an established safe medicine.

Traditional use
Historically the rhizome had limited, risky folk use as an astringent, a strong purgative and emetic, and (externally) a counter-irritant; it was also used to make a black dye and ink. Because of its toxicity these internal uses are obsolete and unsafe; it survives mainly as an ornamental/wetland plant.
Current use
Grown as an ornamental/water-garden plant (and used in reed-bed water treatment); not used as a home medicine — noted for its toxicity.

Adult dosage
No safe internal home dose; not for self-use.
Child dosage
Not for children; keep the rhizomes away from children (poisonous, and the sap irritates skin/eyes).
Caution
⚠️ Toxic and irritant. The rhizome and sap burn the mouth and skin and cause vomiting and diarrhoea if eaten; handling can irritate skin and eyes. Do not eat or self-dose. Do not confuse it with edible sweet flag (Acorus) or other waterside plants. Treat it as a poisonous ornamental to identify and avoid, and keep it away from children and pets.⚠️ سامّ ومهيّج.
Pregnancy & nursing
Do NOT use in pregnancy — toxic, purgative and emetic; unsafe.
