Securidaca longepedunculata (violet tree) is one of Africa's most widely used — and most potent — medicinal roots, taken for pain, infections, chest and 'nervous' complaints and much else. A review of Securidaca longepedunculata documents wide traditional use and real antimicrobial, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and insecticidal activity (its methyl salicylate is also a natural pesticide for stored grain). POTENTIALLY POISONOUS: the root can cause serious poisoning and fatal overdoses have been recorded — do not self-dose it internally. Its methyl-salicylate content also means aspirin-like risks.
