Research

Dock root contains anthraquinones (giving a mild laxative effect) and tannins (astringent), and studies show antioxidant and antimicrobial activity in the genus Rumex, consistent with its traditional use for constipation, skin conditions and as a 'blood cleanser'. The famous nettle-sting relief is likely mostly cooling/placebo. The leaves are edible cooked but oxalate-rich.

Traditional use

The crushed leaf is rubbed on nettle stings and insect bites; the root is used as a mild laxative, an astringent for diarrhoea, and a 'blood-cleansing' remedy for eczema, acne and skin eruptions; the young leaves are cooked as a spinach-like green.

Current use

Used for these conditions

Adult dosage

Root decoction 1–2 g per cup; young leaves cooked (change the water) as food.

Child dosage

Caution

The leaves are high in oxalic acid — eat only young leaves, cooked (ideally with a change of water), in modest amounts, and avoid if you have kidney stones, kidney disease or gout. The root is a mild laxative; overuse can cause cramping and, long-term, potassium loss. Gather from clean ground.

Pregnancy & nursing
