Wormseed is toxic. Its essential oil (ascaridole) has a narrow therapeutic margin and has caused serious and fatal poisonings — vomiting, vertigo, convulsions, respiratory and cardiac failure, and liver and kidney damage — especially the oil and in children. Its use as a dewormer has largely been replaced by safer medicines.
