Introduction
Anemone pulsatilla (Pulsatilla vulgaris, pasqueflower) is a beautiful purple buttercup-family flower with a serious dual nature: it is a classic traditional and homeopathic remedy for nervous, menstrual, eye and ear complaints — but the fresh plant is toxic, containing protoanemonin, so only the carefully dried herb was ever used, in small doses. It is best known today in homeopathic form ('Pulsatilla').

Research
Pulsatilla is studied both for its bioactive triterpenoid saponins (antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anticancer in the lab) and, importantly, for its toxicity: it contains ranunculin, which forms the vesicant protoanemonin on crushing (converting to inactive anemonin on drying). Safety-assessment work has used protoanemonin in Pulsatilla as a model. It is genuinely potent/toxic fresh; its traditional and homeopathic use relies on drying and very small doses.

Traditional use
Used (as the dried herb, in small doses) in Western herbal and homeopathic medicine as a calming nervine and antispasmodic for anxiety, insomnia and nervous exhaustion, for painful, delayed or emotional menstruation and 'PMS', for eye and ear complaints and earache, and for spasmodic coughs; 'Pulsatilla' is a major homeopathic remedy.
Current use
Used chiefly in homeopathic form ('Pulsatilla') and, by trained herbalists only, as a low-dose dried tincture; the raw plant is not for self-use.

Adult dosage
Only the DRIED herb in very small, expert-guided doses (or standardised homeopathic preparations); never the fresh plant.
Child dosage
Not for children except in standardised homeopathic form under guidance.
Caution
⚠️ The fresh plant is toxic — crushed pasqueflower releases protoanemonin, a vesicant that blisters skin and mouth and irritates the gut, kidneys and airways; overdose can cause vomiting, colic, convulsions and collapse. Only the dried herb (protoanemonin converted to anemonin) in very small, expert-guided doses, or homeopathic dilutions, are appropriate. Avoid in pregnancy and never self-dose the raw plant.⚠️ النبتة الطازجة سامّة — فزهرة الفصح المسحوقة تُطلِق البروتوأنيمونين، وهو مُبثِّرٌ يُبثِّر الجلد والفم ويهيّج الأمعاء والكلى والمجاري الهوائية؛ والجرعة المفرطة قد تسبّب قيئاً ومغصاً وتشنّجات وانهياراً.
Pregnancy & nursing
Do NOT use in pregnancy — toxic Ranunculaceae and a uterine stimulant; unsafe.
