Introduction
Mespilus germanica (medlar) is an old-fashioned rose-family fruit tree whose brown, apple-shaped fruit is eaten 'bletted' (softened after frost or storage). The ripe fruit is a mild digestive; the unripe fruit, leaves and bark are strongly astringent and were used for diarrhoea, bleeding and mouth/throat complaints, with antioxidant activity.

Research
Mespilus germanica is documented for tannin, flavonoid, phenolic and vitamin-C content with antioxidant and antimicrobial activity; the fruit is a healthful traditional food and the astringent unripe fruit/leaf support its use for diarrhoea and bleeding. Studies of medlar confirm its antioxidant properties. Evidence is preclinical/nutritional; it is chiefly a heritage fruit and gentle astringent.

Adult dosage
Ripe fruit freely as food; a decoction of unripe fruit/leaf/bark as an astringent in traditional amounts; the same as a gargle; per traditional practice.
Child dosage
Ripe fruit is a safe food; a weak astringent tea for older children's diarrhoea.
Caution
The ripe fruit is a safe, wholesome food. The astringent (unripe fruit/leaf/bark) preparations are high in tannins, so strong long-term internal use is hard on the stomach and can reduce iron/nutrient absorption — take apart from meals and use short courses. Note the seeds contain trace cyanogenic compounds, so they are not eaten.
Pregnancy & nursing
Ripe fruit as food is fine and nourishing; avoid concentrated astringent bark/unripe-fruit doses in pregnancy without guidance.
