Balsam of Peru is one of the most frequent causes of allergic contact dermatitis and is a standard skin patch-test allergen. It can cause allergic skin reactions even on first apparent use, cross-reacts with many fragrances and with foods containing cinnamates/benzoates (cinnamon, vanilla, citrus peel, tomatoes, spices), and can trigger systemic contact dermatitis in sensitized people. Avoid on broken skin, patch-test before wider use, and do not ingest.
